Description

  •  05/12/2017

Business enterprise R&D expenditure in the Biotechnology as a percentage of total business R&D expenditure.

The OECD defines biotechnology as the application of science and technology to living organisms, as well as parts, products and models thereof, to alter living or non-living materials for the production of knowledge, goods and services. This definition is accompanied by a list-based definition based on seven categories that serves as an interpretative guideline: DNA/RNA, Proteins and other molecules, Cell and tissue culture and engineering, Process biotechnology techniques, Gene and RNA vectors, Bioinformatics, and Nanobiotechnology (Indicator and definition from OECD “STI scoreboard”).

International comparisons have to be interpreted with caution because data comparability depends on how statistics are collected and how definition is applied.
