Description

  •  29/10/2018

Expenditure for various innovation activities expressed as a percentage of turnover and as a percentage of total innovation expenditure. The results of the former are extrapolated to the total target population of enterprises (both innovators and non-innovators). The results of the latter are extrapolated to the population of enterprises with product and/or process innovation activities only (including firms whose attempt to implement such innovations was abandoned or not yet finalised).

The period under consideration is the indicated year.

'Manufacturing' corresponds to NACE Rev.2 section C (divisions 10-33).

'Services' corresponds to NACE Rev. 2 divisions 46, 49-53, 58-66 and 71-73 (i.e., wholesale trade; transportation and storage; information and communication; financial and insurance activities; select professional, scientific and technical activities).

Note: The core set of services sectors to be covered in CIS was slightly expanded from CIS 2012 on, per Eurostat’s guidelines. From CIS 2012 on, NACE Rev. 2 divisions 59, 60, 72 and 73 (audiovisual and broadcasting activities, R&D services, and advertising and marketing research) were added; these 4 divisions were not included in CIS 2006, CIS 2008 and CIS 2010. The number of enterprises in these 4 divisions is not very numerous, however; adding them adds roughly 3% to the total targeted population of enterprises. Hence, results between the various years should still be roughly comparable, despite the slight expansion of NACE sectors covered.

CIS 2006 was the only survey for which NACE Rev. 1.1 was still used. We used official guidelines to map its results to those obtained with later surveys, where NACE Rev. 2 was used.

The total target population of enterprises also includes - besides the above mentioned manufacturing industry and services - mining and quarrying, and other industry (divisions 5-9 and 36-39).

Only enterprises with 10 or more employees are considered.
